Luis J Rodriguez and Dayvon Williams share about their experiences working with incarcerated youth, and what can be done within and outside the system to lead to an inner freedom.

Luis J. Rodriguez is co-founder of Tia Chucha’s Centro Cultural & Bookstore and founding editor of Tia Chucha Press. He has worked in prisons, jails, and juvenile lockups for 40 years. He presently teaches creative writing classes in California’s Lancaster State Prison for the Alliance for California Traditional Arts. Tia Chucha’s Centro Cultural was also a recipient of a two-year grant from the Arts for Justice Fund for it’s “Trauma to Transformation Program,” geared to changing the narrative and reality of mass incarceration through the arts. In addition, Luis has authored 15 books in poetry, chlldren’s literature, fiction, and nonfiction, including the bestselling memoir “Always Running, La Vida Loca, Gang Days in L.A.”

Dayvon Williams, based out of Los Angeles, is former foster youth and was incarcerated with a felony at age 18. After a year in LA County Jail, he spent over a year looking for employment and got involved in helping the community. Dayvon landed at the Youth Justice Coalition, and began working with formerly incarcerated youth doing political and social justice work. Dayvon also was involved in acquiring from the Board of Supervisors $1 million to support former foster youth in the LGBTQ community. Dayvon now is attending Southwest Community College, serving on the Youth Passageways Stewardship Council as a Younger Wisdom Keeper, and volunteering at the Minority Aids Project. His dreams are to get a masters in social work, run a non-profit that promotes social justice, be a home owner and a leader in his community.
